Resources from the Sterling Morton Library

Here at the Sterling Morton Library we have a large collection of books on birds and ornithology, click here to see some of our titles! You can also find information on bird sightings here at the Arboretum and from the bird sanctuary that used to be on the grounds in our archives. Below the Sterling Morton Library provides web resources beyond our collections on birding and ornithology organizations, tools, and blogs for all bird enthusiasts.

With plenty of different habitats to offer, about 250 different species of bird have been viewed on The Morton Arboretum grounds over the last few decades. Web resources for amateur and professional birders

Cornell Lab of Ornithology: All About Birds - A leader in the study, appreciation, and conservation of birds, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's All About Birds website includes a bird guide with information on 590 species, bird cams that let you watch birds that are being tracked live, basic guides on bird identification and birding, articles, and much more.


eBird.org - Also from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, this free global web resource provides birders with a platform to share and track bird sightings by species, location, and season. Amatuer and professional birders and ornithologists alike can sign up for a free account and contribute to the growing data and promote bird conservation, or just browse the site to learn more about birds.


Ornithology Exchange - An online community featuring news, articles, forums, blogs, a job board, and more for the ornithological community. 


The American Ornithologists' Union - This site provides links to more birding information, resources, publications, and maintains the Checklist of North and Middle American Birds, the official source for bird taxonomy in North and Middle America.


Illinois Ornithological Society - Your source for specific Illinois bird information featuring, news, articles, a Birds of Illinois list, Illinois bird sightings imported from eBird.org, and more.


Bird Watcher's Digest - Featuring bird identification guides, a bird feeding guide, photo gallery, FAQs, and more.



SORA: Searchable Ornithological Research Archive - Browse or search open access backissues of scientific ornithological journals such as the Wilson Bulletin, the Auk, Condor, and the North American Birds Journal.


Avian Conservation & Ecology - A fully electronic open access scientific journal published by the Society of Canadian Ornithologists and Bird Studies Canada. Published twice a year since December 2005.
