  • Self Guided-Family Play and Exploration: Signs of Spring

Self Guided-Family Play and Exploration: Signs of Spring
After the stillness of winter, spring brings an exuberance of color, sound, texture, and smell! Enjoy the following ideas throughout the spring season in your own backyard or at The Morton Arboretum.
  • Self Guided Family Play & Exploration: Forest Animals

Self Guided Family Play & Exploration: Forest Animals
In spring, the forest comes alive with the comings and goings of its many inhabitants. Take a leisurely walk on a path surrounded by trees and look for squirrels building new nests, birds singing on branches, chipmunks rustling in the leaves, turtles basking in the sun, and other animals emerging from winter’s slumber.
  • Self-Guided Family Play and Exploration: Nests and Eggs

Self-Guided Family Play and Exploration: Nests and Eggs
Spring is nesting time for most species of birds. Take a morning walk in April or early May to listen to the beautiful songbird chorus and observe birds’ complex behavior as they seek mates, build nests, and defend their territories – all before trees fully leaf out!
  • Self-guided Family Play and Exploration: Plant a Tree

Self-guided Family Play and Exploration: Plant a Tree
Trees fill us with wonder and help us breathe, eat, relax, and stay healthy. They also make our yards and neighborhoods more beautiful and provide food and shelter to countless birds, mammals, and insects. Be a tree champion this Arbor Day (April 24) and every day. Use these activity suggestions from our early childhood and family programs team to plant, protect, and enjoy trees anywhere you are!
  • Self-Guided Family Play and Exploration: Seeds

Self-Guided Family Play and Exploration: Seeds
Seeds are energy powerhouses! They contain everything a plant needs to begin growing, except for sunlight and water. Some seeds, like avocado pits, are large; others, like marigold or poppy seeds, are small. Some seeds are green (lentils), others are brown (chestnuts), yellow (mustard), or red (pomegranates). Explore the incredible diversity of these mini superheroes that turn into the many plants we enjoy, with these activity suggestions from our early childhood team:
