Hamamelis x intermedia (hybrid witch-hazel)

Come see the early spring beauty of delicate witch-hazels in bloom at The Morton Arboretum. You’ll find these shrubs and small trees in the Ground Cover Garden and other areas around the Visitor Center and Witch Hazel Dell just north of Lake Marmo on the West Side. Their branches are lined with delicate yellow or red flowers that have clusters of straplike petals.

Visit the Maple and Beech Collection (P14) to see blooming crocus and Siberian squill while listening to a chorus of frogs calling from the nearby marsh.

On the West Side, the Fragrance Garden teams with blooming winter aconite, snowdrops, and various hellebores including lenten-rose (dark magenta) and Christmas-rose (white).

Elms are in full bloom, though their flowers are high overhead and difficult to see. Buds are swelling on many shrubs—not to mention thousands of daffodils—in preparation for the full spring color show.
