Sterling Morton Library, Administration Building
Fees and Registration
Grab a friend and spend a lively afternoon sipping hot beverages while you enjoy little-known stories about The Morton Arboretum. What's that old fountain doing in the library? Why was a white pine planted in the May Watts Reading Garden? Who is REALLY buried in the Morton Cemetery... and who isn't? Which book in the Sterling Morton Library stacks has a direct relationship to a beheading? Why does the library have glass shelves? How has salt been a blessing --and a curse--to the Arboretum over its almost 100 years? Listen as 33-year Arboretum veteran library collections manager Rita Hassert and 20-year volunteer Cindy Crosby spin entertaining tales of a place you thought you knew... until now.
Cindy Crosby is the author, co-author, or contributor to more than 20 books; her most recent is "Tallgrass Conversations: In Search of the Prairie Spirit" (with Thomas Dean). She is also the author of "The Tallgrass Prairie: An Introduction" (Northwestern University Press). Cindy received her Masters in Natural Resources from University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in 2014, and is a trainer for the National Association of Interpretation, helping naturalists and cultural history interpreters become certified as guides. She is the steward for the Schulenberg Prairie at The Morton Arboretum, and coordinates dragonfly monitoring programs at the Arboretum, and Nachusa Grasslands in Franklin Grove, IL. Cindy blogs weekly at "Tuesdays in the Tallgrass at Wordpress", and speaks and teaches in the Midwest on natural history subjects. Read more at www.cindycrosby.com.
Holding an M.S. in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois, Rita has been on the staff of the Sterling Morton Library since 1986. An avid gardener and researcher, she finds herself keenly interested and engaged in the intersection of gardens, people, information, community, art, plants, technology and libraries. Founder of the Library’s book discussion group, Leafing Through the Pages, and coordinator of the Arboretum’s Chamber Concert Series, she believes in the profound impact of The Morton Arboretum!
