Course Description
What’s so “hot” about soil ecology? Grab a grown-up hot chocolate and get “the dirt” on soils from Arboretum soil ecologist Meghan Midgley. “Dig in” to Dr. Midgley’s latest research on the impacts of prescribed fire on our local oak ecosystem soils.
Prescribed fire is a common technique used to control invasive understory plants and promote oak regeneration in woods and savannas across Illinois, northern Indiana, and southern Wisconsin. However, this commonly used technique often produces a range of results, “muddying” the picture. Could the answer to this conundrum lie in the soil?
Come and find out, and get your “burning questions” answered! One alcoholic beverage and snacks included in the cost of the program.
