1. State Street® Miyabe Maple (Acer miyabei ‘Morton’) –An upright, intermediate-sized tree with deeply lobed green leaves with a striking yellow fall color. A Chicagoland Grows® introduction.

2. Sugar Maple(Acer saccharum)* -A large, dense shade tree known for its flaming orange to golden yellow fall color. Requires well-drained soil. 02_Sugar_Maple

3. Yellowwood (Cladrastis lutea) – An intermediate-sized spreading tree with smooth gray bark and blue-green foliage, which turns clear-yellow in autumn.

4. American Smoke Tree (Cotinus obovatus) -A small rounded tree with brilliant orange-red fall color. Mid-summer flowers give the tree a “smoky” appearance.

5. Autumn Purple White Ash (Fraxinus americana ‘Autumn Purple’)* -Large shade tree with an attractive blend of bronze and burgundy fall color. [Because of the Emerald Ash Borer in Illinois, Ash is no longer recommended.]

6. Gingko (Ginkgo biloba) -A large, oval tree with unusual, bright green, fan-shaped leaves that turn a brilliant yellow fall color. Select male cultivars only.

7. European Larch (Larix decidua) -A beautiful cone-bearing, deciduous tree with bright green foliage that turns golden yellow before autumn needle drop.

8. Black Tupelo (Nyssa sylvatica)* -Intermediate-sized, uniform, pyramidal habit with dense, leathery green leaves and brilliant orange to red fall color.

9. White Oak (Quercus alba)* -A stately large native tree with wide spreading crown. Burgundy fall color appears mid-to-late October.

10. Sassafras (Sassafras albidum) -A colony-forming, woodland edge plant with glossy, aromatic foliage that turns yellow to orange-red in the fall.

11. Bottlebrush Buckeye (Aesculus parviflora) -Large, colonizing shrub with beautiful bottlebrush-like flowers in summer and leaves that turn buttery-yellow in the fall.

12. Brilliant Red Chokeberry (Aronia arbutifolia ‘Brilliantissima’) -Intermediate-sized, suckering shrub with scarlet red fall color and bright red fruits.

13. Large Fothergilla (Fothergilla major) -An intermediate-sized shrub with blue-green foliage and white, bottlebrush-like flowers. Fall color is a vivid yellow to orange-red fall color.

14. Common Witch-Hazel (Hamamelis virginiana)* -A large native woodland shrub or small tree with late season yellow flowers and golden yellow fall color.

15. Oak-Leaved Hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia) -Low-growing, summer-flowering shrub that produces a deep red fall color on large, oak-leaf shaped leaves.

16. Virginia Sweetspire (Itea virginica) -A clump-forming, small shrub, which produces fragrant, spiky, white flowers in the summer and brilliant maroon-red leaves in the fall.

17. Spicebush (Lindera benzoin) -A shade-loving, intermediate-sized shrub with spicy, aromatic flowers and foliage that turns a golden yellow in the fall.

18. Prairie Flame™ Shining Sumac (Rhus copallina var. latifolia ‘Morton’) -A dwarf, compact, colonizing small shrub with aromatic foliage that turns a brilliant red-orange fall color. A Chicagoland Grows® introduction.

19. Smooth Sumac (Rhus glabra)* -Large, deciduous, colony-forming shrub with deep red fall color on graceful compound leaves.
