1. Yellowwood (Cladrastis lutea) - Named for the bright yellow internal wood. A 30 to 40’ tall tree with attractive, smooth gray, beech-like bark and bright green leaves. Showy, white, pendulous, fragrant flowers occur in early June every other year.

| 2. Golden Rain Tree (Koelreuteria paniculata) - A 30-40’ tall tree with an equal spread. The 12-15-inch long, showy yellow flower clusters appear in July, followed by papery-brown, balloon-like seedpods. Fallen flower petals carpet the ground like golden rain. |

3. Peking Lilac (Syringa pekinensis) - A multi-stemmed, 20-30 foot tree, with a loose, open habit. Creamy-white, 3-6 inch flower panicles in early to mid-June. The handsome, cherry-like bark is often exfoliating.

4. Silver Linden (Tilia tomentosa) - A pyramidal-shaped tree reaching 50-70 feet. Sweetly fragrant, pendulous clusters of yellow-white flowers in late June to early July. The 3-inch long, shiny green leaves have silvery-white undersides. Its relative, littleleaf linden (T. cordata), flowers 2 weeks earlier.

5. Bottlebrush Buckeye (Aesculus parviflora) - A large, colony-forming shrub, reaching 8-12 feet in height. Striking, large, white, bottlebrush-like flowers appear in July. Palmately compound leaves turn a bright, clear yellow in fall.

6. Butterfly Bush (Buddleja davidii) - An excellent shrub for attracting butterflies. Upright spikes of purple, pink, white, or lavender flowers from July-September. Long, arching stems with blue-gray, willow-like leaves. Cultivars range from 2½-10 feet, but most die back to the ground in winter.

7. Bluebeard (Caryopteris xclandonensis)- Fragrant, gray-green foliage contrasts nicely with the small clusters of lovely deep blue to violet-blue, late-summer flowers. Matures at 3-4 feet tall, and should be cut back to the ground each year. Favorite cultivars include, ‘Arthur Simmonds’, ‘Blue Mist’, ‘Blue Knoll’, and ‘Longwood Blue’.

8. Button Bush (Cephalanthus occidentalis)*- A native, 6-12-foot tall shrub for naturalizing along wet areas. Fragrant clusters of creamy-white flowers appear in early July, followed by 1-inch, ball-like, persistent fruit.

9. Summersweet (Clethra alnifolia)- Native to swamps and wet woodlands of the eastern U.S.; this 6-8-foot, upright, colony-forming shrub bears abundant, pink to white, spicy-fragrant flowers in July and August. Deep green leaves turn yellow in fall, followed by persistent seed capsules in winter. Many cultivars available.

10. Smoke Tree (Cotinus coggygria) - A multi-stemmed, 10-15-foot tall shrub. Feathery, plume-like flowers and seedheads appear as smoky-pink puffs from late June-August, depending on the cultivar. Medium green to blue-green foliage turns yellow-red-orange in fall. Purple-leafed favorites include ‘Nordine’ and ‘Royal Purple’.

11. Bush-honeysuckle (Diervilla lonicera)*- Low-growing, 3-5-foot tall, spreading, deciduous shrub, with bright, sulfur-yellow flowers borne in 2-3-inch clusters in June-July, often lasting into August. Tolerates deep shade.

12. Seven-Son Flower (Heptacodium miconioides)- A large, arching shrub or small, 15-20-foot tree with a loose open habit. Clusters of small, white, star-shaped, fragrant flowers in late August, followed by showy, pinkish-red sepals in the fall.

13. Wild Hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens)- An old-fashioned, colony-forming shrub reaching 3-4 feet tall. Large, 6-8-inch, white flower clusters bloom throughout the summer. Favorite cultivars include ‘Annabelle’ and ‘Grandiflora’.

14. Oakleaf Hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia)- Four-season plant with bold, oak-shaped leaves that turn reddish-purple in fall. Distinctive cone-shaped flowers are white in June and gradually turn pink, fading to brown as they mature. Bark is an exfoliating, cinnamon-brown color. Favorite cultivars include ‘Snow Flake’ and ‘Snow Queen’ (shown).

15 Kalm St. John’s Wort (Hypericum kalmianum) - An interesting, low-growing, 2-3-foot tall mounded shrub with blue-green summer foliage. Bright yellow, 1-2 inch diameter flowers bloom July to mid-August. The hybrids Hypericum ‘Hidcote’ and 'Sungold' are large-flowered selections of related species.

16. Sweetspire (Itea virginica) - A moisture-loving, clump-forming, 3-5-foot tall shrub that produces slender, upright, spiky white flowers in late June and July, and outstanding scarlet to maroon-red foliage in fall.

17. Bushclover (Lespedeza thunbergii) - A slender, compact 3-4-foot tall shrub, with graceful arching stems, blue-green, trifoliate leaves, and rosy-purple, pea-shaped flowers in July. Plants often die back to the ground in winter.

18. Rugosa Rose (Rosa rugosa) - Hardy shrub roses with stout, upright stems, solitary rose-purple to white flowers in summer, and attractive, large, orange-red fruits. Favorite cultivars include ‘Blanc Double de Coubert’ , ‘Frau Dagmar Halstrup’ (pictured), and ‘Purple Pavement.

19. Common Elderberry (Sambucus canadensis)*- A native 6-10-foot shrub with large, flat clusters of white flowers from late June-August, followed by dark purple-black berries.

20. Chaste Tree (Vitex agnus-castus) - An unusual, aromatic, 8-10-foot tall shrub with gray-green, palmately compound leaves. Long, 3-6-inch, violet-colored flowers bloom profusely from late July through September. Plants die back to the ground each year.
