Cultural Requirements: Prefers moist, well-drained, slightly-acidic soils, rich in organic matter. Best in partial shade, sheltered from winter sun and winds that can cause desiccation and browning of leaves. An antidesiccant applied in late fall can reduce moisture loss during winter. Can be easily pruned to maintain size and shape. Flowers on old wood. More cold-hardy than Blue Prince. Chlorosis, or yellowing of the leaves, may occur in soils that are too alkaline; lower the pH of the soil by adding a soil acidifier, such as soil sulfur, to make micronutrients in the soil more available to the plant. No serious diseases or pests.
Ornamental Characteristics: Non-fruiting (male) broadleaf evergreen shrub with bristle-tipped, glossy dark-green leaves and tiny male flowers in May. Pollinator for China Girl® Holly.
Uses in the Landscape: Use as foundation plants and in shrub borders.
