Height: 5-6' Spread: 4-6' Habit/Form: Upright, broad pyramidal Growth Rate: Slow Zone: 5-9
Cultural Requirements: Prefers moist, well-drained, slightly-acidic soils, rich in organic matter. Best in partial shade, sheltered from winter sun and winds that can cause desiccation and browning of leaves. An antidesiccant applied in late fall can reduce moisture loss during winter. Can be easily pruned to maintain size and shape. Flowers and sets fruit on old wood. Chlorosis, or yellowing of the leaves, may occur in soils that are too alkaline; lower the pH of the soil by adding a soil acidifier, such as soil sulfur, to make micronutrients in the soil more available to the plant. No serious diseases or pests.
Ornamental Characteristics: Female broadleaf evergreen shrub with bristle-tipped, glossy dark-green leaves; dark, purplish stems; and tiny white flowers in May, followed by small green fruits that ripen to red and persist through autumn into winter. Must be planted near a male plant with the same bloom time (for example, Blue Prince) to insure pollination and fruit production (typically, one male plant is required for 1 to 3 female plants). Note: Ilex x meservae 'The Royal Family' is 'Blue Prince' and 'Blue Princess' planted and grown in the same pot; only one plant is needed to insure pollination and fruit production.
Uses in the Landscape: Use as foundation plants and in shrub borders. Red berries provide color in the winter landscape and food for wildlife.
