Cultural Requirements: Prefers moist, well-drained, slightly-acidic soils, rich in organic matter. Best in partial shade, with protection from winter sun and winds, but can be grown in full sun to full shade. Tolerant of continually wet soils. Can be easily pruned to maintain size and shape. Flowers on old wood. Chlorosis, or yellowing of the leaves, may occur in soils that are too alkaline; lower the pH of the soil by adding a soil acidifier, such as soil sulfur, to make micronutrients in the soil more available to the plant. No serious diseases or pests.
Ornamental Characteristics: Non-fruiting (male) broadleaf evergreen shrub with smooth-edged, oval, glossy green leaves that turn olive green in winter. Tiny flowers appear in May to June. Pollinator for Compacta.
