Cultural Requirements: Best in dry, well-drained soil in full sun. Established plants withstand drought and wind. Salt-tolerant. Resistant to most pests (including deer). South of the Chicago region, bagworm can be a problem. Mildly resistant to juniper twig-blight diseases. A host for cedar rusts, which are fungal diseases that require both junipers and certain members of the rose family (apple trees, crabapples, hawthorns, and others) to be infected to complete the disease cycle. On junipers, cedar rusts can cause galls (swollen areas) on stems or branches from which orange-colored projections will emerge the following spring. Prune off any portions of stems with galls, and dispose of them (do not compost). Do not plant near apple trees, crabapples, hawthorns, or serviceberries.
Ornamental Characteristics: A ground-hugging evergreen shrub with prickly, dense, green foliage (needle-like and/or scale-like) that turns slightly purplish in winter. Plants seldom produce cones (berries).
Uses in the Landscape: Use as a year-round ground cover, as a foundation plant, in shrub borders, or on slopes. Can be used in rock gardens, in bonsai, or in topiaries.
