Everlow Anglo-Japanese Yew

Tagged as: Low Growing Evergreens

Botanical Name : Taxus xmedia 'Everlow'
Common Name: Everlow Anglo-Japanese Yew

Taxus x media 'Everlow' at The Morton Arboretum

Height:
1-2' Spread: 3-4' Habit/Form: Low, spreading Growth Rate: Medium Zone: 4-7
Cultural Requirements: Best grown in well-drained soil in sun to part shade, sheltered from winter sun and winds that can cause desiccation and browning of leaves. Will not tolerate wet conditions. Can be grown in full shade, but shrub will be less dense. No serious diseases or pests, except deer. Relatively salt-tolerant. Can be easily pruned or sheared to maintain size and shape. Unlike junipers, spruces, and pines, yews can produce new foliage on old wood; so they can be pruned severely and, with time, produce good foliage.
Ornamental Characteristics: A low, spreading evergreen shrub with glossy, flattened, slightly leathery, dark-green needles. Male plants produce small, oval structures that produce pollen. Female plants produce small, inconspicuous flowers, followed by fleshy, red fruits (arils) that resemble berries, if pollinated. The foliage and the seeds inside the fleshy arils are poisonous to humans, but the flesh, itself, is not. Nurseries generally do not sell these shrubs with the gender known.
Uses in the Landscape: Use at the front of foundation plantings and shrub borders.
