Cultural Requirements: Best planted in part shade, however, purple-leaved cultivars will grow in full sun with adequate soil moisture. Grow in well-drained soil high in organic matter. Also quite adaptable to drier, gravelly soils, but avoid low-lying areas where soil remains wet. May suffer from dieback in cold winters, but vigorous stems spring back to life in the spring.

Ornamental Characteristics: Dark oval to slightly elongated purple leaves maintain color throughout the summer. Fall color is often a reddish-purple. Large, purple-pink, airy, plume-like flower stalk clusters provide interest all summer.

Uses in the Landscape: The rich colors of purple-leaved smoke tree contrast well with dark green or blue-green evergreens. Use in a shrub border, in masses or groupings, or as a striking focal point.
