Cultural Requirements: Very adaptable in sun or shade in a wide variety of soil conditions, but prefers moist, well-drained soil. Shallow, fibrous root system benefits with a light layer of mulch. Renewal pruning and heading back may be necessary to keep this suckering plant in bounds.

Ornamental Characteristics: Lustrous to glossy dark green leaves turn yellow to wine-red in the fall. White, flat-topped flowers appear in May and June. The ink-blue fruits mature in September and October and are favored by the birds.

Uses in the Landscape: A native shrub valued for its durability and utility in the landscape. It makes a good screen, informal hedge, useful in groupings and masses, or filler in the border.

Birds Attracted: 35+ species, including flycatcher, flicker, bluebird, grosbeak, and redpoll.
