Crimson Pygmy Japanese Barberry

Tagged as: Low growing shrubs, Berberis, barberry, Four Season Landscape

Botanical Name: Berberis thunbergii ' Atropurpurea Nana'
Common Name: Crimson Pygmy Japanese Barberry

Updated 2/2012

Height: 1 ½ to 2' Spread: 2 ½ to 3' Habit/Form: Mounded  Growth Rate: Medium Zone: 4-7

Cultural Requirements: Prefers full sun but tolerant of part shade. The deep purple-red foliage tends to turn greenish if growing in too much shade. Plants are very adaptable to different site conditions, including windy sites.

Ornamental Characteristics: Truly a four-season shrub, this barberry displays myriad colors and textures. Springtime brings clusters of rich yellow flowers on the undersides of the stems. The display of brilliant red fruit adds a beautiful splash of color that can persist from fall into winter. Stems can be thorny.

Uses in the Landscape: Perfect for mass plantings, in the front of a border, or as a tall ground cover.
