Shrub of the Month-January 2010

Tagged as:

Farges' Hazelnut
(Corylus fargesii)

Farges' Hazelnut at The Morton ArboretumTo glimpse a rare hazelnut with exfoliating bark, park in Parking Lot 17 and walk east along the Main Rout on the East Side. Farges' hazelnut, January's Shrub of the Month, is rarely found outside native China.

This shrub (or small tree) is especially ornamental in winter, when the bare branches reveal its attractive bark. Trailing catkins in spring and large toothed leaves in summer give it year-round appeal.

This shrubby species is native to the forested mountain valleys of western China at high elevations. It is rarely seen outside China and is virtually unknown in the west.

Mature size: 25 to 40 feet
Rate of growth: Medium
