Height: 50-80' Spread: 50-80' Habit/Form: Pyramidal in youth changing to broad-rounded and wide spreading Growth rate: Slow/Medium Zones: 3-9

Cultural Requirements: Full sun; requires moist, slightly acidic soils; sensitive to soil disturbances such as compaction.  Difficult to transplant due to taproot

Ornamental Characteristics: Majestic state tree of Illinois; new leaves emerge pinkish changing to dark green; leaf margins are rounded; fall color varies from brown to a rich wine color; bark is light gray, nearly white in flat strips.

Use in the Landscape: A long-lived native tree for large areas; use as a specimen or in groups in parks and large areas.

Aerial Salt Tolerance: highest degree of salt tolerance; use in most exposed areas
