Tree Care and Improvement

The Morton Arboretum’s researchers study tree health and longevity in urban and suburban landscapes, with an emphasis on selection, planting, establishment, and care.  In addition to this research in tree care and improvement, the Arboretum also has a long history of breeding and selection for improved varieties of trees and shrubs for urban landscapes.

Studies on tree care and improvement focus on the architecture of trees, insect and disease problems, invasive species, understanding and improving soils, and best practices for planting, pruning, mulching, fertilizing, nursery production, and improving the health of declining trees.

Research in tree care and improvement is led by the Arboretum’s Head of Research, Gary Watson.
