Urban forests and ecosystem services

Urban Soil Study 009

Urban forest ecosystems and the services they provide to cities and suburbs

Urban forests, the combination of all trees and forests on public and private lands, provide essential ecosystem services to residents of cities and suburbs. For example, they help control flooding, clean pollutants from the air, reduce energy use and noise pollution, increase property values, and improve community health and well-being. To ensure that urban forests will continue to provide these essential services into the future, the impacts of land use, management techniques, and climate change on the ecology of urban trees and soils must be understood.
