Tree care and improvement

Tree breeding nursery at the Arboretum

Tree health and longevity in urban landscapes with emphasis on selection, establishment, and care.

Developed urban landscapes can differ markedly from the natural environments where trees evolved. Growing urban trees successfully requires research and development of new techniques. Research exploring environmentally informed horticultural practices to make sites more suitable; the development of trees with traits more tolerant of urban conditions; tree biomechanics; and tree pests and diseases is key to developing management strategies that will maintain healthy trees and shrubs in urban environments.
