Celebrating Chocolate This February at The Morton Arboretum
Indulge in our Chocolate Expo, beer and wine pairing classes, cooking lessons and more
LISLE, IL (January 17, 2013) – Beware chocoholics! All February long, the Arboretum is celebrating chocolate and you’re invited to be our official taste-tester.
First stop: The Chocolate Expo & Market, held February 2-3, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in the Visitor Center, is free with admission. Sample classics including award-winning truffles and gourmet chocolate sauces or test your palate with chocolate salami and chocolate balsamic vinegar. Need more chocolate? Try chocolate-filled strawberries, red velvet whoopee pies or Argentinean alfojores. This year we are adding gluten-free options. Pick up a Valentine’s gift, stock up for your Super Bowl party or treat yourself.
During the Expo & Market, take advantage of our free demonstrations. Free, timed tickets are first come first served and available the day of in the Visitor Center. Demonstrations include:
- 10 a.m.: The History, Mystery, and Magic of Chocolate
Kathy Bouchard of Chocolat du Bouchard will present the healthy benefits of chocolate. Enjoy a sample of pure, healthy chocolate.
- 11 a.m.: Chocolate Bean to Bar
Chef Kevin Roblee of Kokku Gourmet will make chocolate from the bean for you to taste.
- 12:30 p.m.: Do You Know Your Candy Bar?
Family fun! Take a blind taste test and identify the chocolate bar.
- 3 p.m.: Master the Chocolate Martini

Truffle Making Party
February 1, 5, 6:30 and 8 p.m.
Member: $35, nonmember: $40, admission included
Starting with a basic truffle recipe, we learn how to elevate your creations with unique, gourmet flavor combinations. We will also learn how to make our truffles look like the pros! Plus, enjoy wine and light refreshment. Take home a gift box of up to six truffles, a $15 value.
Cooking Class: Valentine’s Dinner
February 9, 5-8 p.m.
Member: $55, nonmember: $60, admission included
In this hand-on cooking class, learn how to make a classic Valentine’s Day Dinner for your sweetheart, family, or friends. We will conclude by enjoying our dishes with the perfect wine.
Mousse au Chocolat: The Ultimate Decadence
February 10, noon, 1:45 and 3:30 p.m.
Member: $32, nonmember: $37, admission included
Create this timeless, decadent dessert in a hands-on class with Chef Laura Valcour of Chefs for a Day. Registrants must be at least 18 years old.
Kid’s Cooking Class: Decorate & Build Your Own Candy House
February 10, noon, 12:45 and 1:30 p.m.
Member: $15, nonmember: $20, admission included
Construct a small candy house using molded chocolate panels and Valentine’s Day candy treats. Designed for ages 6 and up.
Chocolate-themed Brunch: Sweet Candy History, Revisted
February 16, 9:30-11 a.m.
Member: $25, nonmember: $30, admission included
Take part in our chocolate-themed brunch featuring historian and author Leslie Goddard. Learn why Chicago has called itself the Candy Capital of America since the turn of the century.
The Botany of Chocolate
February 16, 1-3 p.m.
Member: $22, nonmember: $29, admission included
Discover the botanical origins of chocolate! Learn the botany and natural history of the cacao plant and taste varieties of chocolate.
Wine & Chocolate Pairing Class
February 17, 5 p.m.
Member: $22, nonmember $27, admission included
Sample and savor the nuances of five wine and chocolate pairings while learning why these two complement one another so well. Participants must be 21 and older.
Kid’s Cooking Class: Learn to Make a French Log Cake
February 18, 11 a.m., 12:45 and 2:30 p.m.
Member: $22, nonmember: $30, admission included
Create a decadent chocolate log cake complete with meringue mushrooms and edible decorations. Kids will earn a Chocoholic Certificate and take home a chef’s hat and recipe. Note: Monday, February 18, is President’s Day and most schools are not in session.
Beer & Chocolate Pairing Class
February 24, 5 p.m.
Member: $35, nonmember $40, admission included
Two Brothers Brewing Company and Graham’s Chocolate will present five sweet and savory pairings, including a beer ice cream float! Participants must be 21 and older.

The 2013 rates are:
Adult: $12 ($8 on Wednesday), ages 18-64.
Senior: $11 ($7 on Wednesday), ages 65 and over.
Child: $9 ($6 on Wednesday), ages 2-17. Under age 2 is free.
