The Morton Arboretum Gets You Ready For Spring At The Midwest Gardening Symposium

Three days of planting and landscaping tips for the home gardener

LISLE, IL (February 17, 2006) – The Morton Arboretum invites gardeners from around the Midwest for a weekend of interesting and fun garden design tips, plant selection ideas, and horticultural techniques at the Midwest Gardening Symposium, Friday, March 10 through Sunday, March 12, 2006, at The Arboretum’s Thornhill Education Center, 4100 Illinois Route 53, Lisle, IL.

The Arboretum is pleased to collaborate with Fine Gardening magazine once again for this annual event, which includes a gourmet dinner, a “field trip” to tour the Chicago Flower and Garden Show, and an exciting array of local and national speakers.

"This year's symposium offers many innovative and interesting ideas for improving your garden," said Jan Little, Arboretum Assistant Director of Education, "whether you have a large backyard, a small space, or even just a balcony."

Lecture topics on Friday and Saturday (8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day) include:

  • Finding your garden: listening to the site
  • Shrubs to know and grow
  • Nature at your doorstep
  • Maximizing beauty with container garden placement
  • Birds, butterflies and blossoms
  • Lively soil
  • Using perennials
  • Symposium forum: questions and answers with symposium speakers

All symposium attendees will receive a complimentary tote bag with gifts.

The fee for both days of lectures is $219 ($199 for Arboretum members), or $123 ($113) for either the Friday or the Saturday sessions; all costs include continental breakfast, lunch and afternoon break refreshments.

Additional options for symposium attendees include a four-course “Garden Gourmet” dinner on Friday evening, March 11, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. for $59 ($55 for Arboretum members), and/or a guided tour of the Chicago Flower and Garden Show at Navy Pier on Sunday, March 12, 8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., for $69 ($59).
