Our expert staff has some favorites among this special selection of plants:
Manchurian Striped Maple
“This hardy tree has year-round appeal. Manchurian maple is medium-sized, with large three-lobed leaves that turn a lovely yellow in the fall. Its main attraction, though, is its strikingly beautiful smooth green bark, heavily streaked with white.”
Lycium barbarum ‘SMNDSL’
“With Sweet Lifeberry Goji Berry, you can have exotic, edible fruit all summer long. Brilliant purple flowers give way to juicy, bright red fruits. The best part is that little or no pruning is needed for fruit production. The plant can even be grown in a container!” This plant is new to the market from Proven Winners.
Dark Purple Lilac
Syringa x ‘SMSJPB7’
“Bloomerang Dark Purple is a compact but very showy reblooming lilac. Find a sunny, well-drained site for this four- to five-foot shrub and you’ll enjoy a profusion of immensely fragrant blooms from early spring until frost arrives.” This plant is new to the market from Proven Winners.
Misty Blue White Baneberry
Actaea pachypoda ‘Misty Blue’
“Misty Blue White Baneberry will add interest to your perennial garden through the seasons. In early summer, clusters of white flowers are a nice contrast to the fine-textured blue foliage. In the fall, red stems and showy white fruits are a standout in the shade.” This is a cultivated selection of a native plant.
And don't miss these beauties:
Tutti Fruitti Pink Butterfly Bush
Buddleia ‘Podaras #13’
Compact enough to fit anywhere but a big delight for butterflies! Long-lasting fuchsia-pink fluffs of bloom wave on arching stems on a plant just 24 to 30 inches wide, small enough to be planted in the sunny perennial border, in a mass, or even in a container. Cut it back after a Chicago winter and it will return to flower from early summer until frost. The butterflies will thank you for it! This plant is a new introduction from Ball Ornamentals.
Burgundy Fireworks Coneflower
Echinacea ‘Burgundy Fireworks’
Slender, upturned petals spread like rays of a red sun in an easy-care, handy-sized perennial. Unusual wine-red stems hold the delicate deep beet-red blooms. And those sturdy stems are just 18 inches tall, so this plant can find a place in any sunny garden. A hybrid of three different Midwestern native coneflowers, Burgundy Fireworks is brought to you by The Morton Arboretum and its partners in Chicagoland Grows®, a program to introduce plants specifically chosen for Chicago-area conditions.
Milky Way Chinese Kousa Dogwood
Cornus kousa var. chinensis ‘Milky Way’
The plant on our catalog’s cover is a small flowering tree. From its cascades of creamy white late-spring flowers to its scarlet summer berries to its red fall foliage and intriguing peeling bark, it’s a winner all year long.
