The Morton Arboretum's Namesake Beer Now Available In Local Stores

Arbor Oak Amber Ale
September 20, 2016

The Morton Arboretum’s first namesake beer, a traditional amber ale brewed with oak chips collected from the Arboretum’s own grounds, is now available in six-packs in area grocery and liquor stores in Chicago’s western suburbs. Launched in late 2015 and brewed in partnership with Chicago’s Lake Effect Brewing Co., Arbor Oak Amber Ale balances malt complexity with enough hops for a citrus-spice finish. The slightly oaked character delivers a hint of warm vanilla.

Six-packs of the English-style ale can now be found at the following locations:

  • Binny’s Beverage Depot

   2010 Butterfield Road, Downers Grove
   670 Roosevelt Road, Glen Ellyn
790 Royal St. George Drive, Naperville
   6920 Kingery Highway, Willowbrook
   1500 16th Street, Oak Brook
   213 W. Grand Avenue, Chicago

  • Lisle Liquors, 4719 Main Street, Lisle
  • Malloy’s Finest Wine & Spirits, 1020 Maple Avenue, Lisle
  • Standard Market, 33 E. Ogden Avenue, Westmont

Oak trees have a storied history in making wine, and have played an increasingly significant role in flavoring craft beers. In creating the distinctive Arbor Oak Amber Ale, chips from the Arboretum’s oaks were added at the end of fermentation and aged in the beer for two weeks to impart the essence of oaks.

“We’re pleased to expand distribution of our popular namesake beer since many of our guests have expressed interest in purchasing Arbor Oak Amber Ale outside the Arboretum,” added Anna Cosner, director of retail and events at the Arboretum. “Beer fans will enjoy the unique flavor lent by the oaks in our world-renowned collections and can feel good for supporting the Arboretum’s tree-focused research, science, and education programs.”

“Arbor Oak has quickly become one of most popular beers we’ve created, and we’re excited to bring this ale to a larger market,” said Clint Bautz, co-founder of Lake Effect Brewing Co.
