With nine miles of roads and 16 miles of hiking trails, The Morton Arboretum is an outdoor oasis. Every day of the year, the Arboretum’s beautiful scenery, challenging hills and shaded roads and trails beckon visitors to explore its 1,700 acres – whether hiking the trails, or biking or running the roads.
On Saturday, August 16, you’re invited to experience a sampling of the outdoor activities the Arboretum has to offer, during Active at the Arb. Free with general admission, the Active at the Arb event brings together fitness experts from local organizations to lead demonstrations on running, biking, and fitness.
Start the day with an early morning run through the Arboretum, led by the Dick Pond Runners Club. Following, seasoned runners will provide demonstrations to combat muscle tightness as well as tips on nutrition, running apparel and form. Or, rent a bike and explore our roads on two wheels, starting at 8 a.m.
Fine tune your fitness with pointers and techniques offered by local exercise and wellness experts, including demonstrations from Glen Ellyn-based Bright Spirit Yoga studio and Dahn Yoga and Meditation, also of Glen Ellyn, which incorporates energy awareness and building exercises into its practice. Trees come into play in the agile sport of aerial yoga. Watch instructor Holly Johnson hang suspended from branches in a demonstration from Schaumburg-based Ananda Kamala Aerial Yoga.
“Many of our members and visitors enjoy the Arboretum for our scenic, tree-lined roads and hiking trails, or fitness classes on the grounds, and Active at the Arb will showcase these and other ways to enjoy the outdoors,” said Gina Steele, Special Events Coordinator. “By nature, trees have amazing health benefits, so where better to get fit?”
