CREATE THE GARDEN OF YOUR DREAMS AT THE MORTON ARBORETUM’S 2014 ARBOR DAY PLANT SALE

LISLE, Ill. (March 5, 2014) – The annual Arbor Day Plant Sale returns to The Morton Arboretum on April 26-27, with a hand-picked selection of more than 300 types of plants and trees.  The popular event draws hundreds from around the region each year, from novice to expert, looking for top-rated plants for their garden.

A large variety of trees, shrubs, vegetables, perennials, ferns and ground covers will be available, and every plant purchased will help support the Arboretum’s mission to plant and protect trees for a greener, healthier and more beautiful world. The plant sale will be open to the public on Saturday, April 26 from 12 p.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday, April 27 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

An exciting variety of options available at this year’s Arbor Day Plant Sale include popular varieties of sturdy trees, fragrant shrubs and colorful perennials, all hearty for the Illinois climate.

Need Help?  Find a Plant Genius

Not sure what will work best in your garden?  Look for the Plant Geniuses, a team of Arboretum employees, volunteers and master gardeners, ready to answer any of your gardening questions. Those coming to the sale are encouraged to bring in plans or ideas of what trees, shrubs, vegetables and flowers you would like to see in the yard or garden, and/or sun and shade locations, so our Plant Geniuses can better assist.

Pete Linsner, plant production manager at The Morton Arboretum, recommends thinking about what kind of plant needs you have before you arrive at the sale.

“Ask yourself if you need a durable plant for a dry site, a shade tree to cover an outdoor dining area or maybe a pop of color in a sunny spot,” Linsner said. “Whatever is on your wish list, our Plant Geniuses will have great suggestions.”

The Arbor Day Plant Sale is part of a week-long celebration this year to honor Arbor Day, which is recognized on the last Friday in April. Arbor Day was founded in 1872 by Julius Sterling Morton, the father of Arboretum founder Joy Morton, to encourage the planting and protection of trees. The plant sale takes place in the Visitor Center Parking Lot and opens to members the day before, so arrive early for the best selection. The cost to participate is included with the price of Arboretum admission. For more information call 630-719-2468 or visit mortonarb.org/calendar.
