BIG BUGS ARE INVADING THE MORTON ARBORETUM

LISLE, IL (February 22, 2013) – Descending around Meadow Lake this Mother’s Day weekend will be David Rogers’ Big Bugs. The exhibit will be open from May 10 to September 8 and will be free with Arboretum admission.

The sculptures are built using natural materials including trees, dried branches, roots and green saplings. On display will be an oversized bee hive, lady bug, assassin bug, damsel fly, spider, daddy long legs, praying mantis, dragon fly, grasshopper and three ants.

The size of the bugs immediately strikes visitors. For example, each ant is 25-feet long and 10 feet tall! Being towered over by these immense insects gives guests a glimpse at what it must feel like to be the size of a bug.

Kids are invited to become bug detectives as they explore the exhibit. Children will receive a free bug detective guide, helping them uncover the truth about bugs. Plus, they can take part in daily events to learn more about bugs. Events include live insect displays and bug-themed story times in the Children’s Garden, plus insect-themed family twilight hikes. The Arboretum is even offering an edible insects program for the whole family. Adults can get buggy with classes of their own, ranging from Intro to Entomology to beekeeping and insect inspired art classes.

The 2013 rates are:
Adult: $12 ($8 on Wednesday), ages 18-64.
Senior: $11 ($7 on Wednesday), ages 65 and over.
Child: $9 ($6 on Wednesday), ages 2-17. Under age 2 is free.
