VISIT & explore

Illumination

From November 21, 2014 to January 3, 2015, the grounds of The Morton Arboretum will again glow with dazzling LED lights and trees that respond to touch and sound, as Illumination: Tree Lights at The Morton Arboretum makes its return.

More than 88,000 visitors took part in Illumination’s inaugural season, to witness a wintertime experience far beyond traditional twinkling lights – a mile-long walk through a virtual kaleidoscope of color and light among the Arboretum’s towering trees.

Billed as a “must-see destination” by the media in its first year, Illumination is where lights meet nature, harnessing technology to draw attention to the beauty of trees in the winter months.

Returning in 2014 are popular elements including Hug a Tree, where visitors can hug a tree and watch it glow, unique light projection, and trees that respond to singing.

New experiences in 2014 include trail improvements, new displays and interactive elements and more live entertainment on the grounds.  .

“In its first year, Illumination proved to be a unique wintertime experience for all ages, encouraging people to see trees in a different light,” said Sue Wagner, Vice President of Education and Information at The Morton Arboretum. “Our team has been working closely with our lighting designers, incorporating 2013 visitor feedback to create another can’t-miss wintertime experience.”

Built in partnership with top lighting designer Lightswitch, Illumination features energy-efficient, environmentally-friendly LED lighting technology.
