Cultural Requirements: Prefers moist, well-drained, slightly-acidic soils, rich in organic matter. Best in partial shade, with protection from winter sun and winds, but can be grown in full sun to full shade. Tolerant of continually wet soils. Can be easily pruned to maintain size and shape. Flowers on old wood. Chlorosis, or yellowing of the leaves, may occur in soils that are too alkaline; lower the pH of the soil by adding a soil acidifier, such as soil sulfur, to make micronutrients in the soil more available to the plant. No serious diseases or pests.
Ornamental Characteristics: Female broadleaf evergreen shrub with smooth-edged, oval, glossy green leaves that turn olive green in winter. As plant matures, can become "leggy" (lower portions of stems sparsely-leaved). Tiny white flowers appear in May to June, followed by small green fruits that ripen to black in autumn and persist into winter. Must be planted near a male plant with the same bloom time (for example, NORDIC™) to insure pollination and fruit production (typically, one male plant is required for 1 to 3 female plants).
Uses in the Landscape: Use in hedges, as foundation plants, in shrub borders, in woodland gardens, or along ponds and streams. Black berries provide color in the winter landscape and food for wildlife.
