Syringa reticulata at The Morton Arboretum

Height: 20-25' Spread: 15-25' Habit/Form: Oval to Rounded Growth Rate: Medium Zone: 3 to 7

Cultural Requirements: Best flowering occurs in full sun, but tolerant of part shade. Grow in loose, well-drained soils, pH adaptable. Once plants are established they are fairly heat and drought tolerant. Typical of all lilacs, prune after blooming for best flowering the following year.

Ornamental Characteristics: Large, 8-10-inch, creamy-white fragrant flowers are borne at the ends of branches in late June. Reddish-brown, cherry-like bark, and clean, dark green leaves enhance seasonal interest.

Uses in the Landscape:
Tree lilacs are dependable urban trees, including as parking lot or boulevard plantings, which tolerate a wide range of conditions. Large flowers in early summer, attractive bark, and persistent inflorescence create multiple seasons of interest.

Birds Attracted: Cardinal, chickadee, and finches

Plant Appeal for Birds: Seeds

Aerial Salt Tolerance: Highest degree of salt tolerance; use in most exposed areas>
