Height: 8-10' Spread: 10-12' Habit/Form: Upright-spreading. Growth Rate: Medium Zone: 5-8
Cultural Requirements: One of the hardiest of the purple-leaf forms, selected from The Morton Arboretum collections. Best planted in part shade, but the purple-leaved cultivars will grow in full sun with adequate soil moisture. Grow in well-drained soil high in organic matter. Also quite adaptable to drier, gravelly soils, but avoid low-lying areas where soil remains wet. May suffer from dieback in cold winters, but vigorous stems spring back to life in the spring.
Ornamental Characteristics: The outstanding features are the large airy, pink, plume-like flower stalks that provide interest all summer. Oval to slightly elongated purplish-red leaves hold color well into the summer and then change to an orange-yellow in the fall.
Uses in the Landscape: The rich colors of purple-leaved smoke tree contrast well with deep green or blue-green evergreens. Use in a shrub border, in masses or groupings, or as a striking focal point.
