Panicled Hydrangea

Tagged as: Four Season Landscape, Butterflies, Large Deciduous Shrubs

Botanical Name: Hydrangea paniculata
Common Name: Panicled Hydrangea

Updated 5/2012

Hydrangea paniculata at The Morton Arboretum

Height: 10-20' Spread: 10-15' Habit/Form: Upright to spreading Growth Rate: Fast Zone: 3-8

Cultural Requirements: Full sun to part shade; prefers moist, organically rich, well-drained soil. Plants are shallow-rooted and benefit with a layer of organic mulch to maintain a cool root environment. Avoid extremely dry sites. Because flowers are produced on the current season's wood, pruning in late winter or early spring encourages vigorous growth and larger flowers.

Ornamental Characteristics: Coarse-textured. Older bark assumes a handsome gray-brown, ridged and furrowed look. The showy, pyramidal-shaped flower clusters bloom in mid-summer, opening white, gradually changing to pink, rose, and finally brown that can last until the following spring. Attracts butterflies.

Uses in the Landscape: This plant can be difficult to incorporate into the landscape due to its size and texture but can be used in group plantings and shrub borders for its summer flowering.
