Cultural Requirements: Prefers part shade to full shade in well-drained soil. May suffer from winter burn if not sheltered from strong winds. Does not tolerate heat, drought, or urban conditions.

Ornamental Characteristics: Broadly pyramidal, horizontal branches become pendulous with age. Fine-textured, dark green, ½-inch long needles on two rows, with an extra row of flattened needles on the top of stems. Abundant, 1-inch long brown, ovoid cones hang from branches like small ornaments.

Uses in the Landscape: Use as a specimen plant or screen, or it can be sheared as a hedge. Native to the Midwest.

Birds Attracted: 35+ species, including warblers, junco, veery, goldfinch, and bluejay

Plant Appeal to Birds: Cones; shelter; nesting site

Plant tolerant of occasional or temporary flooding
