Cultural Requirements: Full sun to light shade; best in slightly acidic, organic-rich, moist soil

Ornamental Characteristics: A cross between horse-chestnut and red buckeye; rose-red, cone-shaped flowers in May; 5-leaved, lustrous dark green palmate foliage; 1 ½-inch prickly fruit; not as susceptible to leaf blotch and mildew as European horse-chestnut.

Use in the Landscape: A shade tree for large areas; may not be appropriate as a street tree because of the large spiny fruits
