Shrub of the Month-May 2010

Tagged as:

Wavecrest Siebold's Viburnum
(Viburnum sieboldii ‘Wavecrest')

Wavecrest Siebold’s Viburnum at The Morton ArboretumMay's Shrub of the Month is one of the finest among many fine viburnums, this shrub blooms heavily in May with clusters of 5-inch creamy-white flowers. Find Wavecrest Siebold's Viburnum near Thornhill Parking Lot (Parking Lot 21), south of shelter.

What is not to love about this shrub? The large, heavily textured foliage remains lustrous green most of the summer, and it blooms heavily in May with wide flat-topped white flower clusters. These are followed by crops of bright orange berry-like fruits and impressive reddish-orange foliage in autumn. The bright red pedicels remain showy even after the berries fall, giving this shrub an especially attractive look in autumn.

Wavecrest Nursery & Landscaping of Fennville, Michigan developed this shrub, which combines the best features of the popular Viburnum sieboldii (very easy to grow, showy clusters of creamy white flowers, abundant fruit) with outstanding fall color.

Mature size: 10-15' high, 10-12' wide
Rate of growth: Medium
