Tagged as:

Seward Common Ninebark—Summer Wine™ (Physocarpus opulifolius ‘Seward')

Seward Common Ninebark—Summer Wine™ at The Morton Arboretum

The soft pinkinsh-white flowers of Seward Common Ninebark—Summer Wine™

sparkle amidst its dense wine-colored foliage and burgundy stems. This Shrub of the Month enlivens the windmill garden inside the Children's Garden.

You might know ninebark as an undistinguished shrub with green leaves, but this one, as its name implies, has outstanding burgundy foliage. The name ninebark refers to the exfoliating bark found on mature branches, which peels off in strips to reveal layers of red-to-brown inner bark.

Mature height: 5 to 6 feet high and 4 to 5 feet wide
Rate of growth: Moderate
