Purple Haze hazelnut at The Morton ArboretumEarly summer is the best time to catch the impressive maroon-purple foliage of Purple Haze hazelnut. Walk along the Tram Road by Meadow Lake to see June's Shrub of the Month.

Most ornamental species of Corylus go fairly unnoticed until they burst into bright orange color in autumn. This one, however, has vivid color from spring through fall, with pendulous yellow catkins in early spring and vivid burgundy new growth, which turns bronze by mid-summer.

Mature height: 8 to 10 feet high and wide
Rate of growth: Fast
