Shrub of the Month - April 2009
Tagged as:
Madison Snow Dahurian Rhododendron
(Rhododendron dauricum 'Madison Snow')
Large white flowers grace the branches of April's Shrub of the Month. Look for this early bloomer on the south end of the Azaleas and Rhododendrons Collection near Parking Lot 2.
The genus Rhododendron comprises some 900 species and a bewildering profusion of hybrids, ranging from low-growing groundcovers to giants more than 30 feet tall. This outstanding hybrid combines the best features of several species. A native of Siberia, it is unusually hardy, even in places where temperatures reach minus 25 degrees. Despite its early blooming time, it seems to survive spring frosts better than some others do.
Mature height: 5' high and 3' wide
Rate of growth: Moderate
