1. Rue Anemone (Anemonella thalictroides) - March-June;   4-8”tall; white or pink flowers positioned on wiry stems above the foliage.

2. Jack-in-the-Pulpit (Arisaema triphyllum)-April-July; 12-24”tall; green and purplish-brown striped hood arches over a club-shaped spadix (Jack); showy, brilliant red clusters of fruit in fall.

3. Wild Ginger (Asarum canadense)-April-June; 6-12”tall; two shiny, leathery, heart-shaped leaves hide the unusual ground-level, reddish-purple flower.

4. Spring Beauty (Claytonia virginica) – March-May; 6”tall; flowers are white with pink veins; leaves are grass-like.

5. Dutchman’s Breeches (Dicentra cucullaria)-March-May; 6-12”tall; unusual nodding white flowers are shaped like upside down trousers; fern-like feathery, blue-gray foliage.

6. Toothwort (Dentaria laciniata)-March-May; 8-16”tall; white to light pink, 4-petal flowers stand above deeply-toothed leaves.

7. Shooting Star (Dodecatheon meadia)-April-June; 8-24”tall; basal, lance-shaped leaves; tall flower stalk topped by small cluster of pale pink to white, nodding, star-like flowers.

8. White Trout Lily (Erythronium albidum)-March-May;     4-8”tall; thick, single or paired mottled leaves; nodding, star-like flower on two-leaf specimens only.

9. Wild Geranium (Geranium maculatum)-
April-July; 12-18”tall; deeply cut, 3-5 lobed leaves; 5-petaled, magenta-pink flowers in loose clusters; beak-like seed capsule resembles a crane’s bill.

10. Sharp-Lobed Hepatica (Hepatica acutiloba)-March-May; 2-6”tall; earliest flowers of spring; blue, white, or pink flower-like sepals appear before new leaves; older 3-lobed leaves stay through winter turning purplish; flower stalks.

11. False Rue Anemone (Isopyrum biternatum)-April-May; 4-16”tall; delicate white flowers; leaflets more deeply cut than rue anemone; generally found in large colonies.

12. Virginia Bluebells (Mertensia virginica)-March-May;   12-18”tall; erect stems with alternate leaves; nodding clusters of trumpet-shaped, pink or blue, rarely white, flowers.

13. Woodland Phlox (Phlox divaricata)-April-June; 6-24”tall; blue to lilac flower clusters; lance-shaped leaves are arranged opposite on hairy stems.

14. May Apple (Podophyllum peltatum)-May-June; 12-18”tall, 1 to 2 very large, umbrella-like leaves with deeply cut lobes attached to one stem; a single white flower on 2-leaf specimen only;  small apple-like fruit under leaves in late June.

15. Jacob’s Ladder (Polemonium reptans)- May-June; 8-16”tall; basal leaves divide into pairs forming a ‘ladder,’ numerous deep blue, bell-shaped flowers are on separate stems.

16. Smooth Solomon’s Seal (Polygonatum canaliculatum)-May-July; 12-36”tall; arching stems with smooth, pale green leaves; greenish-white flowers hang tassel-like along the stem; fruit is a blue-black berry.

17. Bloodroot (Sanguinaria Canadensis)-April-May; 3-6”tall; a single white flower emerges from an enfolding shallow-lobed, gray-green leaf; orange-red sap from stem once used as a fabric dye.

18. White Trillium (Trillium grandiflorum)- May-June; 10-18”tall; three very large, waxy-white flower petals gracefully curve backwards above 3-leaved stem.

19. Red Trillium (Trillium recurvatum)-April-June; 8-16”tall; three mottled, distinct, short-stalked leaves; a single dark red, stalk-less flower has drooping sepals and erect petals.
